How do you greet dogs that you don’t know very well?
Many people believe that the best way to interact with a dog is to offer the back of your hand and let them sniff it. This is actually quite a rude thing to do in the dog world - shoving ourselves into their space is invasive and can come across as threatening. Basically, it’s a very good way to scare the dog and get yourself bitten!
We should never force any dog to interact with us. Let them approach you at their own pace, ignore them, and read their cues to see how they’re feeling. It’s their choice if they want to say hello or not - most dogs will make their feelings very clear on this.
Taking the pressure off and encouraging choice makes it easier to build trust over time 🐾
